Makeup Artists Put Your Most Beautiful Face Forward

Celebrities do it, so do mega recording artists, and TV personalities do it, maybe you should too?

Lola Skorman-Chayra

If you’re looking to put your best face forward, Lola Skorman-Chayra is the woman you need. A longtime San Antonio resident, Skorman-Chayra now lives in Los Angeles and travels as an educator for the luxury brand Cle de Peau Beaute. Returning to the Alamo City often, Skorman-Chavra exclaims, “I never stopped doing Fiesta-  this was my 30th year!” But aside from the frivolity and parties, Skorman-Chayra, a Havana, Cuba native, comes to town to give her special touch to everyone from debutants, models, Fiesta royalty, and ladies in the know with her deft makeup artistry.

Armed with an Arts degree from Incarnate Word and a long successful career, Skorman-Chayra is on the secret weapon speed dial list of those needing to shoot portraits, attend galas, and wanting to leave their former classmates breathless with envy at their high school reunions.

Skorman-Chayra shares her perspective and best advice:

What’s your definition of beauty? "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" is so true. Every woman has something about her that brings out her beauty. It can be her eyes, her heart, or her confidence. We are such beautiful creatures. You just find it and bring it out. Often it’s their eyes, which reflect their souls.

What do you aim for when doing a client’s makeup? I aim for knowledge about my client- I like to get to know her before I start on her face and learn about her lifestyle. I assess the texture of her skin and I find out what skin care products she uses. Once the research is done, I start with a good treatment. I love Cle de Peau Beaute. I opened it in Neiman Marcus, Beverly Hills. These products are the number one line of couture skin products in Neiman's and Barney's. It's the Japanese technology and the secret of Asian medicine that goes way back in history.... they're just super impressive.

I teach her how to use the products and during a gentle face massage we have a face to face interaction and I find out the purpose for her makeover and where she’s going and what she’s wearing. I love when my client shows up with makeup on because this way I know her style and how she applies her makeup.

After all is said and done, I ask for her favorite color of lipstick and I check out her nail polish. By doing this it helps me as a guide to pick out my colors for her eyes. I like to go with natural tones and soft pastels. Then I see how she is reacting to my work and then add black to eyes to make them a bit smoky and always a pop of glow..  Eyebrows are extremely important and I love doing them!

As a finishing touch, I contour. Also, I love soft bronzers and add a small amount of blush right on the apples of the cheeks. I make sure she has an amazing glow about her just like being at a red carpet event......natural, but stunning!!

Name three things every woman should have in her makeup kit?

  • -Lipstick. You can use it as blush, too!
  • -Mascara
  • -Eyebrow pencil. You can use it as an eyeliner, too!

What’s a trend to try? There’s no age limit, but this is especially good for mature women looking for a matte look. Use cream eyeshadows. Cle de Peau has one made with Japanese silk that’s also a treatment with advanced, anti-aging technology. You want a little sheen to it, nothing frosted. It’ll give your eyes light and a vibrant radiance. You can mix crème shadows with your powder shadows for a different look.

San Antonio is hot, muggy, and humid. Any suggestions on how to make your makeup last? Sun protection is a must. You want to make sure your skin is moist and hydrated. For foundation, consider one that goes on as a liquid then turns to powder. Cle de Peau’s Radiant Powder SPF 23 has silk and super hydrating hyaluronic acid and is a Hollywood favorite. Or you can use a BB cream with powder.

What do you recommend if you don’t have time for a full face of makeup but there’s a sure chance you might run into someone you know? Lipstick. Women are picky about their lipstick. If you do your lips, you are half way done. You can always wear sunglasses and you are out the door.

What’s your personal signature? Lipstick. I really like nudes or a bright red.

Why use a professional makeup artist rather than doing your own makeup? Having your makeup done by a professional is so much fun! Why not! Spoil yourself - you deserve it.  Women work hard and sometimes it’s good to get information of the latest trends so you can keep up and learn from them. I suggest clients do it twice a year so you can keep up with the latest for every summer and winter color palette and treatments that are available for you. I love teaching how to use products and demonstrate more uses for makeup products. Makeup artists are a tool toward transformation, a way to enhance yourself.

Can you do consultations long distance? Yes How does someone make an appointment with you? They can reach me by email, facebook or phone. Lots of clients and I work together through Skype. When I’m in San Antonio I do house calls or clients come to a salon.

Marisa Martinez

Marisa Martinez grew up in Laredo and began doing makeup work at the age of 16 before working for Chanel at 18. She relocated to San Antonio at 23 and continued honing her makeup skills with years of freelance work for Chanel, Lancome, and MAC before setting out on her own. She possesses a refined perspective in that she is also a professional portrait photographer. “Ninety-nine percent of the time I do the makeup for my shoots. I do like having that control. I usually start out with minimal makeup and then add from there, saving the more formal or edgier wardrobe and makeup for last,” says Martinez. She’s done brides and weddings for many years and loves Fiesta related work. “As a portrait photographer and makeup artist, I love making women look and feel beautiful. It's important that every woman feel feminine and beautiful and sexy.”

Martinez shares her perspective and best advice:

What’s your definition of beauty? Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder. Natural beauty has always been my favorite. Beautiful skin, a healthy glow and happiness. I don't know who originally said this but "A beautiful girl is a happy girl.” And it could not be truer!

What do you aim for when doing a client’s makeup? The first question I always ask is "where are you going?" Second being "what are you wearing?" I also ask them how they are used to doing their own makeup and what their limits are. Do they want full coverage? Do they want a heavy eye? Lashes? Are they okay with contouring? You want to make sure that they are comfortable and confident.

Name three things every woman should have in her makeup kit?

  • -C-thru lipglass from MAC
  • -Voluminous mascara by Loreal
  • -A good BB cream like Maybelline's Dream Fresh

What’s a trend to try? I pretty much stick to what I have liked for a while. I love how Scott Barnes does makeup, so I am always looking at his instagram or I often find myself Googling him to see if he has come up with something new. He is an artist like I am and I think that artists who draw or paint the human face make the best makeup artists. They know about shadow and light and about the color wheel. I think it makes all the difference.

San Antonio is hot, muggy and humid. Any suggestions on how to make your makeup last? Never use a foundation powder to touch up with, you'll be building these thick layers and it will look cakey as the day goes on. MAC has blotting powders specifically for shine. Blotting sheets work well too. But if you're going to go out for the night, then I suggest washing your face and starting over if you can.

What do you recommend if you don’t have time for a full face of makeup, but there’s a sure chance you might run into someone you know? Try to use a tinted moisturizer or a bb cream, a good mascara and lip gloss with a hint of color. And if you can only do one thing then I say go with the mascara! After 15 years of having to have a full face on every day, (makeup artist for 25 years but worked at the counter for 15) I am now a no makeup woman, so I concentrate on taking care of my skin and focusing on my lashes when I have to run out the door... unless I have an event.

What is your personal signature?  Voluminous Mascara and NYX Butter Gloss.

Why use a professional makeup artist rather than doing your own makeup? I think it does help women to try some things they have never tried before. I'm big on teaching my clients how to do it at home as well. I want them to feel they can do it on their own, too. I was never the type of sales person who would sell you something you didn't need. I often go through my clients' makeup that they already have and show them how to use what they've got, get rid of what is of no use to them, and get them what will work best for them. San Antonians love to dress up. I love that. They always want to look their best no matter where they go. I have had so many women come to me for makeup because they were going out to dinner.

How does someone make an appointment with you? Most of my clients send me a text. I usually do house visits, but also have a home studio in Alamo Heights. Examples of my makeup work can be seen on my photography website, I did all the makeup.
