Why Moving Downtown is a Growing Trend

While some of us grew up imagining spending our adulthood in a quiet suburban home on a cul de sac, the truth is that more people today are choosing to live downtown, where the action is. They have discovered they’d rather be near the hustle and bustle of commercial and cultural activity than in the more subdued, less populated neighborhoods surrounding the city.

That desire to be in the heart of it all is fueling a movement back into the city of San Antonio. And it’s driving up interest in downtown properties.

After all, living downtown you’ve got the River Walk, the Alamo, popular neighborhoods like River North, Southtown, King William, Lavaca, and SoFlo. Within the San Antonio Arts District you’ve got popular restaurants, trendy bars, art galleries, and festivals, making the area especially popular with young professionals and creatives.

Those local attractions are why more people moved to San Antonio than any other city in the U.S. in 2017, according to the U.S. Census Bureau and reported by Texas Public Radio. In fact, in a single year, San Antonio gained 24,200 more residents, many of them choosing to move downtown.

So what does city living look like? For many condo residents, it’s a lot like living in a hotel.

Lucky residents of downtown condominiums often have stunning skyline views. They overlook everything going on in the heart of downtown. Many condos also enjoy luxury features such as standalone tubs and radiant heat flooring in the bath, crystal chandeliers, smart-home technology, seamless glass windows, and multiple parking spots.

In addition to luxury inside, condo residents can also enjoy use of each building’s amenities – which range from fitness centers to rooftop pools or gardens, putting greens, coffee bars, yoga and pilates studios, valet parking, and even concierge service.

No need to get in your car and drive to the gym, to grab a cup of coffee, to dinner, or to shopping – take the elevator down and walk to your destination. No more fighting for a parking spot.

Not to mention the lack of any need for exterior maintenance when you live in a downtown condo. No more cutting the lawn, weeding the walkway, or painting the property. Instead, you can spend your time on other, more pleasurable pursuits.

While downtown condos are typically sleek and modern with high end finishes, townhouses with multiple stories can feature modernity or charm and elegance. The advantage of townhouse living is the layout, which stretches over multiple floors, not to mention the absence of upstairs and downstairs neighbors.

Luxury townhouses frequently offer many of the bells and whistles of newer condos – commercial-grade kitchen appliances, natural stone, hardwoods, spacious baths – in addition to flights of stairs or even an elevator. Some may also offer a small backyard, if grilling or gardening is your thing.

The only thing you give up by moving downtown, really, is travel time. When you live in the heart of the city, you’re in walking distance of your favorite spots. If you are considering a move downtown or uptown the top-selling luxury experts at Portfolio Real Estate are here to assist you.
