5 Ways to Staycation in San Antonio
There’s a reason San Antonio is a popular tourist destination; there’s lots to do in and around our beautiful city. But you don’t have to be from out of town to enjoy the fun! Here’s a roundup of interesting and different ways for locals to celebrate an Alamo City staycation like never before.
Walk Among Dinosaurs – The Witte Museum
Just opened, the Witte Museum’s $100 million transformation is a celebration of nature, innovation and Texas history and culture. Housed in a soaring glass room, you’ll find showstoppers like the life-size dinosaur replicas including Tyrannosaurus Rex, Acrocanthosaurus and the flying Quetzalocaoatlus.
You’ll want to check out all the Texas Deep Time exhibits for an educational, immersive history of the Texas story spanning eras. Full of dynamic technology, guests can discover the people, fauna, flora and fossils of the Lone Star state in impressive dioramas. The museum offers 10-acres of discovery indoors and out.
Yoga On The Water - Hill Country Paddle Sports
Boerne Lake is the perfect setting to combine yoga and paddleboarding. Hill Country Paddle Sports offers fun and challenging Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga that incorporates flexibility, core strength work and balance. Think of the paddleboard as a floating yoga mat. Bring your own board or rent one.
If yoga on the water doesn’t interest you, Hill Country Paddle Sports also offers race and cruise paddleboards as well as single and double kayak rentals.
Cinema Under The Stars -
Enjoying classic, adventure, dramatic, and animated films in picturesque, outdoor locations, is one of the best ways to spend an evening of perfect San Antonio weather. Offered at locations like Travis Park, Hemisfair Park, Stinson Municipal Airport and the grounds of the San Antonio Museum of Art, there are usually food trucks, but you can also bring a picnic.
Just north in New Braunfels, the three screen Stars & Stripes Drive-in opened in 2015 and is a bit of a best-kept secret . . . except on the weekends when the line can be long. Weeknights are easier to get in, but either way it’s one of the coolest ways to catch double-feature, current, in-theater movies. The country setting is a nice escape from the city and the retro 50’s vibe right down to the snack bar is charmingly nostalgic.
Church As Art – The Saga at San Fernando Cathedral
If you haven’t seen it yet, spring is an ideal time to see the stunningly beautiful San Antonio "The Saga" by renowned French artist, Xavier de Richemont. Set in Main Plaza, the video art installation is projected onto the historic San Fernando Cathedral in downtown San Antonio. Multiple showings on scheduled nights use music, light and art to tell the historical settlement and development of San Antonio. It’s only 24-minutes long, but you’ll wish it lasted longer. There is very limited available seating, so come early or bring lawn chairs or blankets. Most nights there are food trucks and raspa carts.
Blooms and Paws – San Antonio Botanical Gardens
Time spent at the San Antonio Botanical Gardens is always interesting with its Japanese and Cactus Gardens, East Texas Piney Woods, and Hill Country trails, but it’s especially fun when you can bring your dog along! There are select days throughout the year when a $5 donation toward animal-friendly charities will give your pet admission. These "Dog Days", March 18-19, will have the gardens in full spring bloom and is a perfect time to catch a glimpse of Monarch butterflies and hummingbirds.
