Master Your Closet

Erin Hensley, of Order in the House, believes your closet can be a place free of stress, “The master closet should be a calm, streamlined environment where you put yourself together every day to face the world. Your wardrobe and accessories should be easy to access with everything at an arm’s reach. Visibility is key to remembering what you have, so your outfits come together completely.”

Hensley, certified by the National Association of Professional Organizers, cautions that the most important organization rule is to keep only as much as you realistically have room for in your closet. “Large closets allow for a larger, active wardrobe and allow many dressing options. For others, a smaller closet environment is fine, as they only keep pieces for a season or two and then move on to the latest styles and trends. At times, too many options can be overwhelming.”

While working with a professional can be the most efficient way to help with a closet makeover, Hensley has advice you can apply to make you the master of your own closet:

-Don’t allow your closet to be a catchall. Purge anything not related to dressing. That means no rolls of wrapping paper, memory boxes, empty shoe boxes and no bags or tags from past purchases.

-If the defined space is full, then something has to go in order for something to be added.

-Group all like items together in order to decide what to purge.

-Keep what fits now. If your size goes down, you will want to be shopping for updated fashions.

-Group items together. Group sleeveless tops, short-sleeved shirts, and long-sleeved blouses together.

-Hang colors together in each category.

-Hang slacks on clip hangers to prevent creases. Jeans and leggings can be folded over on hangers.

-Use velvet slim line hangers whenever possible. Wooden hangers are great for suits and other items if you have the space. Never hang clothes on wire hangers from the dry cleaner.

-Do everything possible to keep the floor clear. This gives a spacious and open feel to the space and it is much easier to vacuum. Use acrylic boxes for shoes and store on shelves.
